Screen-print tee-shirts, share resources and kōrero - an afternoon making anti-racist and Muslim solidarity tshirts - from 3.30pm to 6.30 on Rāapa, 17 April at Thistle Hall. Come hang out, screen print some t-shirts, have anti-racist kōrero, share resources and listen to music. Peace Action Wellington and SOUL are hosting an afternoon making anti-racist and Muslim solidarity tshirts. They will have stencil designs ready to screen-print but are also up for helping you make your own. BYO blank t-shirts to print on but there will also be some available for a donation. The Freedom Shop’s 20th birthday party was appropriately opened by the ceremonial smashing of a TV. Inside Thistle Hall there was a timeline of the history of the shop with many historic photos. A zine making workshop lasted the whole afternoon, a patch making workshop was held and visitors enjoyed having a go at ‘pinning the lie on John Key’ (over 200 lies were available to chose from). And of course plenty of radical books, zines, patches and CDs were on sale. Freedom Shoppers who had started the original shop (which was right across the road from Thistle Hall at 272 Cuba St – now the bypass) told yarns about the early days of the shop and an interesting discussion was had around the future of radical publishing (watch this space). In the evening we enjoyed music by Dick Whyte, Dead Vicious, Awkward Death and The Four Stars until late. Thanks to the many people who contributed and helped make the event happen! Place: Thistle Gallery , Cnr Cuba and Arthur Street Dates: 27 January – 02 February Opening Hours: 11am – 6pm daily. Launch: 5.30pm Monday 27 January Twenty years ago, on January 1st 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect, the Zapatistas in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas said “Enough!!” and took a stand against attempts to further dispossess them of their indigenous lands and culture. For the last 20 years they have pursued a peaceful path, constructing from below and to the left a 'world in which many worlds fit'. The exhibition at Thistle Hall features photos of ordinary and extraordinary moments in 20 years of the life of a people under constant military and paramilitary threat, going about the business of survival following a path of patience, dignity, and resistance.
